Wounded bear slips past police
A black bear is still at large in southwest China despite being shot by police after escaping from a zoo, authorities said yesterday.
The nine-month-old bear, weighing 100 kilograms, escaped from the zoo in Sichuan Province on Friday morning by climbing over a 3-meter-tall wall.
It disappeared into a mountainous area near Shehong County.
More than 300 local police officers are hunting the bear, while veterinarians accompanied officers in the hope of saving the animal, according to Chengdu Evening News.
Chen Xin, the county police chief in charge of the hunt, said: "We used guns because no anesthetic rifles could be found, but police will not shoot to kill because the black bear is a protected animal."
