Writer detained for portrayal of migrants' hardship
A 55-year-old writer was held by police at his Beijing home on suspicion of illegal business dealing since a reportage he published at his own cost to reveal some migrants' struggling in life, which rankled local authorities in charge of their relocation.
Xie Chaoping was handcuffed and taken away by several officers, including four from Weinan City in Shaanxi Province, on August 19 and had his draft, laptop computer, digital voice recorder and USB flash disk seized during a room search at the same time.
Xie's attorney was informed by police on Monday that the circulation of the special report "Great Migration" by Xie at his own expense made him a suspect of illegal business dealing.
Xie's story is all about people dislodged by the construction of Sanmen Gorge Dam on the Yellow River, who were relocated in Weinan. The 100,000-word story was published on the 2010 supplement of a bimonthly magazine based in Shanxi Province.Xie spent 50,000 yuan (US$7,340) for 10,000 copies.
He also attempted to give some copies to those migrants but was seized by local authority.
Weinan's press watchdog and police went to Shanxi to negotiate with local authority, demanding a review of the supplement over its legality.
The magazine later admitted the circulation of the supplement by its Beijing office was not granted by press authority.
An official with the Shanxi press authority said the magazine's Beijing office had been suspended from work while an investigation was made into the incident.
