Wrongly jailed 8 years, man gets compensation
A MAN in south China wrongly jailed for eight years for a murder he didn't commit will receive a 890,000 yuan (US$130,720) compensation.
Nearly 10 days after his release, Wang Zifa signed the agreement with officials of Hechi City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region yesterday after the government agreed to add 140,000 yuan to the original compensation package and pay off his medical treatment.
Wang, who was finally freed thanks to the real murder's turning himself in to the police, said he still wanted the government to issue a public statement to clarify his innocence and launch a total investigation into the police officers and court officials responsible for his wasted life.
However, Wang, now 36, seemed reconciled to the settlement after one of Hechi City officials apologized personally to him and his family, China Radio Station said.
Wang was sentenced to death for killing Wu Zongmou, a local villager, who was stabbed to death while having supper with Wang in September 2001. Wang, wounded in the fight, picked up the knife the murderer had used to report to local police.
But six police officers didn't believe him and tortured him in custody, said Wang.
The turning point came in 2007, when the actual culprit Tan Hanbao, in prison for robbery, confessed to killing Wu and hurting Wang six years ago before fleeing.
