Wrongly jailed duo lose compensation hope
TWO men who spent 15 years in detention before they were found not guilty said they had lost their last hope after a seven-year battle for compensation.
Liu Junhai and Liu Yintang, villagers in Hebei's Linzhang County, were seized by police in 1988 as suspects for burning down a house and killing its three occupants, Yanzhao Metropolis Daily reported today.
Liu Junhai, who was only 18 years old, confessed his guilt days after he was taken into custody. Later, Liu Yintang also confessed too.
They were kept in the same cell and made one scratch on the cell wall for every day they spent in it. They never dreamed they would make 5,444 scratches before they were finally let out, the report said.
Prosecutors filed charges of murder 11 years after the Lius were arrested based on their confessions, which they said in court were induced by torture.
The report did not say why it took so long for the prosecutors to file the suit. During their imprisonment, Liu Yintang was paralyzed by cerebral thrombosis. Liu Junhai had a brain tumor and was sent to hospital for a year before he was imprisoned again.
Finally in 2003, Handan City Intermediate People's Court declared the men innocent and they were set free.
"The county court told us to sue the prosecutors, and the prosecutors sent us to Hebei Higher People's Court, and the higher court told us to seek compensation from the county prosecutors," said their lawyer Gao Shiyou.
All legal avenues were now exhausted and the two have not been paid any compensation.
