Wrongly jailed husband’s relief after killer of his wife is caught

A MAN in east China who was acquitted of his wife’s murder for lack of evidence after spending 17 years in jail can finally put suspicions to rest after the real murderer was caught.

Yu Yingsheng, now 51, was taken into custody on December 22, 1996, 10 days after his wife, surnamed Han, was found dead at their home in Bengbu, Anhui Province, the People’s Daily reported yesterday.

The Intermediate People’s Court of Bengbu City sentenced Yu to life in prison. An appeal to Anhui’s Higher People’s Court failed.

After he went to prison, Yu maintained his innocence and had his father and brother continue to appeal for his release.

On May 31 this year, the higher court reopened the case after new evidence emerged and Yu was acquitted on August 13 because the court ruled there was not enough evidence to convict.

Police launched another round of investigation, and the real murderer, surnamed Wu, was caught in Bengbu last Wednesday, the newspaper said. Wu admitted he raped and killed Han 17 years ago.

Yu’s elder brother said the whole family were relieved when they heard about Wu’s arrest.

“My brother is totally clean now that the real suspect is caught,” he told the newspaper.

Before this, he said, the public doubted if his brother was really innocent even though he had been acquitted.

He said the family had spent many years and hundreds of thousands of yuan trying to clear his brother’s name. “All these have paid off,” he said. “It’s a new day for all of my family. We had been dreaming of this day for 17 years. It’s now a dream come true.”

He said the only regret was that their father had not lived long enough to hear the news.

Yu had regained his job in local government and had been awarded an unspecified amount of state compensation.

Asked for Yu’s phone number, his brother said that what Yu needed most was a normal life.

“Leave him undisturbed.”
