Wuhan University poised for cherry-blossom crowds
WUHAN University in central Hubei Province is bracing itself for a tide of visitors drawn to the ravishing sight of cherry blossoms at the campus and days of traffic nightmare.
To minimize disturbance to its teaching activities, the university has adopted a set of measures to manage crowds and traffic, Wuhan Evening News reported today.
More traffic police will be deployed at and around the campus to direct traffic. A pedestrian area will be created at the campus and toilets in the buildings of the Journalism Department and the Public Management Department will be opened to the public. The school will also recruit 2,000 volunteers to help maintain order.
Last year, Wuhan University recorded a record volume of visitors, peaking at 160,000 per hour. This year's blooming season is expected to start around March 18.
The university charges each visitor 10 yuan (US$1.52) for entrance and a guidebook. Cherry is called sakura in Japanese.
