Wuhan factory closed for making fake tofu
AUTHORITIES have shut down a bean curd mill in Wuhan, Hubei Province for making bogus bean curd without using a single soy bean.
The Industrial and Commercial Bureau of Dongxihu District, said workers in the bean curd mill mixed large amounts of synthetic materials, such as soy protein isolates, coloring, soy oil and modified starch to make fake tofu, the local Changjiang Times reported today.
The coagulated curd was packaged in a way that made it look exactly the same as a well-known tofu brand, Qianye, and sold to markets in Hunan, Hubei and Sichuan provinces since May.
The knock-off bean curd has enjoyed such a booming business that led to a sharp drop in sales at the Suzhou-based Deanfa Food Company that makes Qianye tofu.
Yang Shuaifeng, an investigator from Deanfa Food Company, said the bogus Qianye tofu even carried the same anti-counterfeit laser hologram.
He said a machine to print laser holographic labels would cost at least 8 million yuan (US$1.2 million), indicating the large scale of production at the mill, Changjiang Times reported.
Police seized 47 bags of soy protein isolates, 16 barrels of soy oil and seven barrels of coloring agents used to whiten food at the factory.
The factory's boss, identified by his surname Zou, said he didn't have production license or registration number for his product. He simply copied the Qianye tofu's package and told distributors they were real.
