Wuxi official detained over mistresses, bribes

THE Party secretary of Binhu District in Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province has been held for investigation after local authorities received a tip-off that he kept several mistresses and took hundreds of millions of yuan in bribes.

Zhu Weiping, 51, has been placed under "shuanggui," a euphemistic term for interrogating a corrupt official at a designated time and place, the 21st Century Business Herald reported today.

Discipline officials have seized several bankbooks and property ownership certificates from his home after he was held in custody at the end of September, an unnamed source told the newspaper.

Zhu's downfall is said to be triggered by a tip-off from a manager of a local steel company called Xuefeng. The manager once borrowed 200 million yuan (US$32.12 million) from a bank with Zhu's help and promised to give him some commission. But the company just received half of the bank loan and suspected Zhu took the rest.

Since Xuefeng couldn't' pay its debts due to poor business, it decided to report it to the government to get the money from Zhu. Details of how Zhu kept his mistresses were also mentioned in the tip-off report, the source said.
