Wyeth milk found safe

NO melamine has been found in Wyeth formula milk powder which reportedly caused kidney illnesses in 20 children, said China's quality supervisor yesterday.

The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said it checked every batch of powder produced and imported by Wyeth from September 14 until now and no melamine was detected.

The newspaper Nanfang Daily reported on Monday parents of 20 Chinese infants alleged that their children suffered kidney disorders after drinking Wyeth milk powder.

However, Wyeth refuted the report, saying there were no medical reports or other evidence supporting the parents' claims.

Last year, melamine-adulterated milk powder killed at least six Chinese infants and sickened almost 300,000. More than 300 children were still in the hospital at the end of December, according to the Ministry of Health.

Two people have been sentenced to death for their roles in the contamination scandal, while the ex-chairwoman of Sanlu Group, which was at the heart of the melamine shock, was jailed for life.
