Xi: Military must be more innovative
PRESIDENT Xi Jinping has called for more innovation from China’s armed forces as the world witnesses a “military revolution.”
“The world’s new military revolution has come at the same time as opportunities and challenges for China, and we must develop foresight and insight into their development,” Xi said while presiding over a meeting of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee on Friday.
Xi, who is also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, urged Party members to be more aware of military issues and to support defense and military reforms.
“The world is in a stage of accelerated evolution and profound adjustment,” Xi said, noting that progress in the military sector has informationization at its core.
Developing the military is about innovation in military strategies, technologies, operational thinking, combat forces and military management, with the goal of reshaping the system, he said.
The revolution is developing so fast and with an impact that has rarely been seen since the end of World War II, Xi said.
The military must make great leaps to close the gap on its better-developed peers around the world, he said.
“We should cast off the paradigm of mechanized warfare and embrace an approach to war featuring information technology,” Xi said.
“The principle of protecting traditional interests should be shifted to one of comprehensive security and strategic interests.”
The tendency of military departments to defend their own interests should be thrown out in favor of maintaining the interests of the army and country, he said.
The president also said he encouraged the integration of military and civilian innovation so that the two can develop together.
