Xi calls for ASEAN support, vows to bolster partnership

President Xi Jinping yesterday called for understanding and support from the Association of South East Asian Nations on China’s major concerns.

He made the remarks during a meeting with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in Beijing.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the strategic partnership between China and the ASEAN.

Mutual respect, understanding and support are the most precious assets in China-ASEAN relations, Xi said, noting that China will stick firmly to the path of peaceful development.

The president said China will continue to foster good-neighborly relations and alliance with ASEAN countries to consolidate the strategic partnership.

Xi said China attaches great importance to the development of friendly cooperation with Singapore, calling on both sides to increase mutual trust, coordinate development strategies and deepen cooperation in various fields, so as to promote a stable and healthy development of bilateral ties.

Singapore and China share broad common interests, Lee said, adding that his country will firmly pursue a friendly policy toward China.

The prime minister said Singapore takes a positive view of China and believes that China’s development is an important opportunity for ASEAN and the region.

Lee, who arrived on Sunday, is on an official visit until Saturday at the invitation of Premier Li Keqiang.

In his talks with Lee, Premier Li said the new administration of China will give priority to relations with ASEAN.

China will smoothly handle problems with some ASEAN members that are a legacy of history, the premier said.

Li stressed China’s determination for peaceful development as well as its uswerving will to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity. With regard to disputes between some countries in the region, he said China always stands for solutions through negotiations and consultations between the concerned parties.
