Xi calls for political settlement with Taiwan
President Xi Jinping yesterday called for a political settlement to prevent disagreements between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan that had lasted more than six decades from being handed down “from generation to generation.”
Speaking ahead of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit on Bali, Indonesia, Xi told Vincent Siew, honorary chairman of Taiwan-based Cross-Strait Common Market Foundation, that political issues could not be put off forever.
“Increasing mutual political trust across the Taiwan Strait and jointly building up political foundations are crucial for ensuring the peaceful development of relations,” Xi said.
“Looking further ahead, the issue of political disagreements that exist between the two sides must reach a final resolution, step by step, and these issues cannot be passed on from generation to generation,” he added.
Xi reiterated the mainland was ready to conduct equal consultations with Taiwan on cross-Strait political issues under the one China framework and make reasonable arrangements.
Xi said the two sides across the Taiwan Strait should stick to the correct path of peaceful development of relations.
He said the concept that “both sides of the Strait are of one family” should be advocated, adding that the two sides should strengthen their communication and cooperation and jointly work for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
Xi stressed the historic opportunity should be seized to maintain the sound momentum of peaceful development of cross-Strait ties, adding that people on both sides expected their relations to make greater progress.
Both sides should comply with people’s aspirations, seize opportunities and achieve new results in the development of cross-Strait relations, he said.
On cross-Strait economic cooperation, Xi said the economies of the two sides both belonged to the economy of the Chinese nation.
Under the new economic development situation of the Asia-Pacific region, the two sides could better deal with challenges only through cementing cooperation.
He called for more efforts to institutionalize cross-Strait economic cooperation and urged greater importance be attached to industrial cooperation.
Siew noted that facing up to the new challenges in the global economy, the two sides should expand and deepen economic and trade institutionalized cooperation and promote sustainable development of cross-Strait relations.
