Xi hailed for role as master diplomat

PRESIDENT Xi Jinping has been personally involved in planning and conducting “brilliant” head-of-state diplomacy, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said yesterday.

Describing the president as the chief architect of China’s major-country diplomacy, Wang said Xi has visited 57 countries and received more than 110 foreign heads of state since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2012.

Furthermore, Xi has deepened the world’s understanding of China, enhanced the country’s profile and influence, and facilitated the solution to many global problems.

Speaking at a press conference on the sidelines of the first session of the 13th National People’s Congress, Wang said: “Xi’s leadership and charisma has earned him and his country many good friends, among foreign leaders who represent a diverse range of cultures and social systems.”

Xi will attend the BRICS summit in South Africa, the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Papua New Guinea and the G20 Summit in Argentina this year, Wang said. These will write a whole new chapter of major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics in the new era, Wang said.

China, meanwhile, is hosting four events this year which feature highly on the country’s diplomatic agenda, he added.

First, the Boao Forum for Asia annual conference will take place in Hainan next month, and focus on reform and opening-up.

Second, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit will take place in Qingdao in June, and look at revitalizing the Shanghai Spirit.

Third, the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation summit will take place in Beijing in September, with the Belt and Road initiative taking center stage.

Fourth, the First China International Import Expo will take place in Shanghai in November, and focus on further market opening.

Xi emphasized in his report to the 19th Party congress last October that China will work with other countries to foster a new type of international relations, and to build a community with a shared future for humanity.
