Xi seeking new type of US relations
CHINA is willing to work with the United States to keep the two nations on the right path toward building a new type of major-country relationship, President Xi Jinping told US President Barack Obama yesterday.
The two leaders met ahead of a nuclear security summit at The Hague, their first meeting this year.
Xi said he appreciated a similar commitment from the US side in a letter he received recently from Obama.
Xi said he agreed with what Obama said in the letter — that China-US cooperation is beneficial in the promotion of shared interests and in dealing with common challenges.
Beijing will also join Washington in handling bilateral ties based on such principles as non-confrontational actions, mutual respect and win-win cooperation, Xi said.
In remarks to reporters ahead of their meeting, Obama said he and Xi would discuss the situation in Ukraine, denuclearization of North Korea and climate change.
Obama said their bilateral relationship was as important as any in the world.
“China is firmly committed to ... building a new model of major country relations,” Xi said, according to a translator. “We are committed to our position of no confrontation ... mutual respect, and win-win cooperation with regard to the United States.”
Xi made a point of thanking Obama for US help in searching for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 which had a large number of Chinese passengers on board.
Obama thanked Xi for hosting his wife and daughters, who are touring China.
“She also played some table tennis, although I think this was not the high level ping pong diplomacy that we saw in the past,” Obama joked about his wife.
Xi said he had a message for Obama from the US first lady.
“She asked me to formally convey to you her best regards,” he said to laughter in the room.
Xi arrived in the Netherlands on Saturday for a state visit, the first such visit by a Chinese president to the western European country since the two nations established diplomatic ties in 1972.
The Netherlands is the first leg of Xi’s European tour, which will also take him to France, Germany and Belgium.
