Xi warns army of corruption risks
PRESIDENT Xi Jinping has pledged a harsh strike against military corruption as the People’s Liberation Army prepares to celebrate its 87th anniversary today.
Xi, also head of the Central Military Commission, urged troops to strengthen ties with the people and avoid undesirable work styles such as formalism, bureaucracy, hedonism and extravagance.
He made the remarks during a visit to the headquarters of the military region of Fujian, where he worked for 17 years. Xi stressed the need for the military to be loyal to the Party, saying: “The Party’s absolute leadership over the army should be unswervingly adhered to.”
The anti-graft campaign is vital for the nation’s drive to build a strong army able to defend its people at a time of ominous threats in the region, the president said.
In a recent circular, the military ordered officers to give back extra properties if they had more than one military-owned apartment or their combined size exceeded the allowance for their rank. On July 9, the PLA ruled that all malpractice uncovered by the PLA audit office would be transferred to military law enforcers.
The PLA also looked into overuse of secretaries and office attendants for senior military officers and the living standards of retired senior officers.
All are measures indicating that in building a strong army, every officer, no matter the rank, must follow rules.
