Xiamen police pin down arson suspect after 47 die in bus fire
THE suspect for an arson case that killed 47 people on a bus in the eastern Chinese city of Xiamen has been identified, local police said on their official microblog today.
Initial investigation indicated that the bus fire that killed 47 passengers and hospitalized 34 is a "serious criminal case," the local government said at a press conference this morning.
Police and transport authorities suspect that the deadly fire was not caused by a self-burning tire or the oil tank of the fully-loaded BRT (bus rapid transit) bus that caught fire in Xiamen, Fujian Province at 6:20pm yesterday as they detected gasoline in the wreckage of the diesel-powered bus.
A government spokesman said the investigation is continuing. An expert team led by the State Councilor and Public Security Minister Guo Shengkun arrived in Xiamen in the wee hours of this morning.
