Xingtai goes off the scale
Cities in Hebei and Jiangsu provinces suffered the heaviest pollution among 74 cities monitored yesterday morning.
As of 7am, the air quality index in Hebei’s Xingtai surged past the ceiling reading of 500 while the second most heavily polluted city of Baoding recorded 476, the People’s Daily website reported.
Shanghai was seventh of the top 10 cities recording the worst air quality.
Other cities in Hebei in the top 10 were Handan, Tangshan and Shijiazhuang, the provincial capital. The other four cities were in Jiangsu, which borders Shanghai on the north.
