Xinjiang officials punished after attacks
SEVENTEEN officials in China’s northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have been punished for dereliction of duty after a series of terrorist attacks in September.
The punishments come after the Party chief of the northwestern region vowed a “people’s war” against terrorism.
The officials include Liu Fulin, Party chief of Luntai County, his deputy and other county and township officials, according to Xinjiang’s news portal, ts.cn.
Most were given serious warnings, but the Party chief and government head of Terakbazar township were dismissed.
Forty rioters were killed in a series of bomb attacks in Luntai County on September 21 last year. Six civilians were killed and dozens injured.
Xinjiang is in the midst of an intensive crackdown on terrorism after a string of attacks.
Zhang Chunxian, Xinjiang’s Party chief and a Politburo member, said the region would continue to push forward an anti-terrorism operation that began in late May.
Earlier this week he said the region’s fight against terrorism had entered a new phase that is “more complicated and more intensive,” though the security situation was under control.
