Xinjiang police capture terrorist group

POLICE in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have captured a terrorist group together with materials and tools to make explosives, China's anti-terrorist authorities announced today.

Six suspects, including ringleaders Seyitamut Obul and Tasin Mehmut, were captured in the northwest Chinese region. "A large quantity" of materials and tools to make explosive devices were seized during police raids in the suburbs of Aksu city in Xinjiang. Police did not say when the suspects were seized.

Initial investigation showed the gang had made more than 20 explosive devices in three places in the suburbs of Aksu after the July 5 riot, and planned to carry out terrorist attacks, the police said.

The riot in the regional capital Urumqi killed nearly 200 people, mostly ethnic Han.
