Xinjiang quake hurts 21, halts rail

TWENTY-ONE people were hurt in a magnitude-5.8 earthquake that hit northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Thursday, authorities said yesterday.

The quake rocked a border area between Atux in the Kizilsu Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture and Kashgar Prefecture about 6pm on Thursday. Four people are in critical condition, local authorities said.

The quake also toppled 147 houses and severely damaged 171 others, a spokesman with the Kashgar Prefecture government said. No deaths have been reported in the earthquake, said the spokesman.

The operation of two passenger trains was suspended after the quake, which damaged railway lines and bridges, said the railway bureau of Urumqi, the region's capital.

A train bound for Kashgar from Urumqi was forced to stop at the Aksu train station, about 460 kilometers northeast of Kashgar. Passengers were offered free transportation to their destinations via bus.

Normal operation of the halted railways had yet to be resumed by midday Friday.
