Xinjiang terrorist sentenced to death for killing 15 people

THE mastermind of a terrorist attack that killed 15 people and injured 14 others in China's northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region was sentenced to death yesterday.

Abdulkiram Mamut was convicted of the crimes of murder and organizing terrorist activities by the Kashgar Intermediate People's Court, local news website Tianshannet.com reported today.

The convict was found promoting religious extremism and leading an eight-member terrorist group from July 2011 to February 2012.

On the morning of February 28, 2012, Abdulkiram Mamut gathered the eight members in his house and handed knives and axes to them for a terrorist attack.

They came to a pedestrian street in the town of Yecheng around 6pm and began to hack innocent passers-by. Their killing spree left 13 people dead at the scene, two more dead in the hospital, and another 14 injured.

Abdulkiram Mamut was caught on the spot. Seven of his members were shot dead and another died later in a hospital.

During their rampage, one police assistant died and four policemen were injured.

The court said Abdulkiram Mamut committed an extremely brutal crime against innocent people and the attack had grave consequences.
