Xinjiang to add year to preschool
AUTHORITIES in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region are planning to extend the period of bilingual preschool education it provides to three years from two during the current Five-Year Plan period (2016-20).
According to official figures, 85 percent of preschool children across the region will have access to such education by 2020, up from 77 percent last year.
The central government has invested more than 1 billion yuan (US$154 million) this year to build 552 bilingual kindergartens in Xinjiang, mainly in the southern areas.
About 2,500 such facilities have been established over the past five years.
The region is heavily populated by people of Uygur ethnicity. The government said that bilingual education — in Mandarin and minority languages including Uygur — will improve people’s job prospects.
