Xinjing arrests 70 people who turn kids into thieves

POLICE in the northwest Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have arrested 70 suspects who allegedly abducted children and trained them to steal and rob.

A police spokesperson said yesterday that they had busted eight criminal gangs in a nationwide crackdown since May 1 and rescued at least 16 children, Xinhua News Agency reported today.

Investigation showed most of these children were abducted or lured by suspects to live a vagabond life by stealing and robbing.

The Xinjiang government vowed in April to bring all abducted Xinjiang children home and help them go back to school.

A total of 60 million yuan will be spent on building and renovating schools in the region, according to an early report by Qilu Evening News.

The report quoted a social worker as saying that frequent crimes committed by Xinjiang natives have damaged the area's image. His research showed up to 50,000 Xinjiang children are roaming vagrants in the country and the number was 6,000 a decade ago.
