Yao to let daughter pick her country

HOUSTON Rockets center Yao Ming said the citizenship of his daughter will be up to her when she turns 18.

Yao told CNN yesterday that his daughter is now an American but "the decision to become a Chinese or not is up to her." Yao's wife Ye Li gave birth to their child in May in the United States.

Yao also disclosed that his daughter was not very tall, as many people have guessed. He said that though her parents were both basketball players, he'll respect his daughter's career choice, whatever it is.

"If she loves playing basketball, no problem, I'll give her some advice. Otherwise, she'll do what she likes to do," Yao said.

Yao, 30, talked about the upcoming 2010-2011 National Basketball Association season.

"It is the most important season of mine, as I was absent for the entire season last year plus a record of serious injury."

Dr Tom Clanton, who operated on Yao's foot last year, revealed late last month that his hairline fracture has fully healed.
