Yellow fever confirmed in China
HEALTH officials yesterday confirmed the first imported yellow fever case in China.
The patient, a 32-year-old man from east China’s Zhejiang Province, experienced stage one symptoms of the disease last Tuesday while in Luanda, capital of Angola, the National Health and Family Planning Commission said.
He sought medical treatment after returning home on Thursday, and is now said to be in a “relatively serious” condition, with weakened liver and kidney functions.
The case was confirmed following tests carried out by the Beijing Center for Disease Prevention and Control and the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the commission said.
Yellow fever is an acute viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes and is mostly found in tropical regions of Africa, and Central and South America. Its symptoms include fever, jaundice and bleeding.
The risk of transmission from the patient is fairly low, as it is not the season for mosquito breeding, the commission said.
