'Yes-woman' at CPPCC attracts critics

A TV anchorwoman and political advisor has been criticized for saying she has never voted against any proposal at the annual legislature meeting.

Ni Ping, a celebrity delegate to the annual Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the National People's Congress, told reporters that she would never vote against a proposal nor abstain "because she doesn't want to make trouble for her country."

Her remarks sparked an uproar among Internet users and a strong editorial from today's Oriental Post, which said she was being irresponsible by creating a fake consensus of opinion.

The damage could be irreparable if the legislature passed laws with loopholes, the report said. And if every delegate followed Ni's example, the means to hear grassroots views would become dysfunctional, the newspaper said.

Ni told today's Guangdong-based New Express Daily that she really did agree with all proposals put forward in every two sessions meeting. She said she could understand people's doubts but they wouldn't affect her plans.

She also said 99 percent of the congress delegates agreed with proposals and it would be silly to doubt the ability of everyone.
