Young gang steals rearview mirrors, charges for their return in Guangdong
FIVE young thieves stole rearview mirrors of hundreds of upscale vehicles and blackmailed the car owners to get them back, earning hundreds of thousands of yuan in Huazhou, in southwest China’s Guangdong Province. They have been detained by police.
The average age of the gang members is less than 17. They confessed that they had committed more than 300 such thefts since May.
Several car owners have reported to police since October that they found the rearview mirrors of their cars missing after they parked outdoors overnight. And they also found a ransom note with contact phone numbers clipped by windshield wiper, requiring money to be transferred for the return of the mirrors.
They demanded from 100 yuan (US$16) to 300 yuan at first, then raised the price to 300 yuan to 3,000 yuan, depending on the type of car targeted.
