Youth faces life for ATM robbery
AN 18-year-old man in Beijing is facing life in prison for allegedly trying to force open two ATM machines, though the suspect claimed he didn't know they were cash machines.
The man, surnamed Wang, pleaded not guilty to the charge of stealing from a financial institution, which carries a sentence ranging from five years in jail to life imprisonment. Prosecutors demanded punishment to the fullest extent of the law as the money involved reached 400,000 yuan (US$60,762), reported Beijing Morning Post yesterday.
Wang allegedly hit the machines with a hammer last May, the People's Court of Yanqing County heard on Tuesday. However, the defendant insisted he was intoxicated and merely wanted to release pent-up emotions.
Wang emphasized he had never used any kind of bank service before, and had no intention of taking the money inside the machines. The court has not announced a verdict.
The ATM robbery case is not new in China. Xu Ting, a 24-year-old migrant worker, was found guilty of taking 175,000 yuan from a faulty ATM machine in 2006. He was sentenced to life imprisonment initially, which triggered a media outcry. Xu saw his term reduced to five years at a retrial in 2008.
