Yunnan boosts tourist safety

Following the terrorist attack in southwest China’s Kunming on Saturday, tourism authorities in Yunnan Province have urged strict measures to boost security.

Yu Fan, deputy director of the province’s tourism development committee, urged tourism departments to refine emergency response plans for violent terrorist incidents.

He also required tourism administrative departments at all levels, travel agencies, A-level scenic spots, accommodation providers, tour bus companies and shopping centers to carry out safety education and apply strict safety measures.

In addition, Yu urged the strict implementation of emergency reporting systems.

However, according to the committee, the attack had a limited impact on tourism.

Six tour groups had canceled visits to Kunming on Sunday, or just 1 percent of all the domestic tour groups in Yunnan that day. There had been no reports of cancellations since the capture of three suspects on Monday.

The province’s railway stations, airports and passenger transport terminals have tightened security measures, while public security agencies and armed forces had strengthened patrols.

Normal services at Kunming Railway Station resumed on Sunday. All local middle and primary schools opened as normal on Monday.

A gang of eight knife-wielding attackers ran through crowds of people at the railway station on Saturday night, killing 29 people and injuring 143 others.

A SWAT team officer shot and killed four of them and wounded a female suspect who was detained at the scene.

Health authority officials said 20 of the 143 injured are still in a critical condition.

According to the tourism committee, the province was visited by 240 million domestic tourists and more than 5 million overseas tourists in 2013, a year-on-year rise of 22.1 percent for domestic tourists and 16.5 percent for those from abroad.
