Yunnan court puts 21 mafia-like gangsters to jail
A court in southwest Yunnan Province sentenced 21 members of a mafia-style gang to prison yesterday for crimes of extorting protection fees, robbery and intentional injury.
The gang ran an illegal coal mining in Fuyuan County from 2008 until their arrest. To control other coal mines in the region, gang leaders Li Kejin and Li Raobing recruited local thugs to extort so-called "protection fee" from other mine owners.
The gang's other crimes included running a casino, robbing local residents and attacking law enforcement officers, the Qujing Intermediate Court said.
The gang's six main organizers, including Li Kejin and Li Raobing, were sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment while the rest 15 gangsters were given jail terms from three to 18 years.
