Yunnan tour guide nabbed for attempted rape

A tour guide working in a scenic spot in Lijiang, southwest Yunnan Province was put in police custody for attempting to rape a female tourist and injuring other members of her group as they came to her rescue, local authorities said yesterday.

Lijiang Tourism Bureau made an apology to the woman and her tour group and compensated them by refunding the money they had paid for the trip and other fees in the Lugu Lake resort, totaling 33,450 yuan (US$5,258).

The woman surnamed Zhou and two other tourists injured by the suspect surnamed Cao were helping the police with the investigation and had not signed their compensation paper.

The bureau said they had revoked the tour guide license from Cao.

"The whole thing was like a horror movie and I don't want to recall the guide's face ever," Zhou told the Yunnan Information Daily. "He dragged me into his room and tore off my clothes."

The 22-year-old victim said her group enjoyed a bonfire party on the bank of the Lugu Lake on Saturday night. Afterwards, Cao invited Zhou and two other female tourists to eat barbeques.
