Zhang Ziyi fights on as Mulan
CHINESE actress Zhang Ziyi, who has been embroiled in donation scandals, will return to the Hollywood screen in a US$100 million 3D film "Hua Mulan."
The movie featuring Hua Mulan, a legendary female general in ancient China, will start shooting in October on the Chinese mainland. Zhang will be leading actress and co-producer, Shanghai Morning News reported today.
The movie will be financed by Walt Disney and Chinese investors. Disney also shot a cartoon version of the same story in 1998. The cartoon finally took in US$300 million at the box office.
The lead actor will be American born Chinese pop singer Lee-Hom Wang, who can speak fluent English. The film will be directed by Chuck Russell, who directed "The Mask" and "The Scorpion King."
The film was scheduled to start shooting last year with Hong Kong director Johnnie To. It was delayed because of financial issues, the report said.
After the 1998 Disney version of "Mulan" proved to a smash hit, Hong Kong director Jingle Ma presented his "Mulan" story last year with Zhao Wei and Chen Kun as leading actors.
Compared to previous versions, Zhang Ziyi's "Hua Mulan" will have more fight scenes, Youth Daily reported.
