Zhang set to produce again after huge debut
CHINESE actress Zhang Ziyi is set to be a producer again in her next movie, "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan."
Her debut as a producer, "Sophie's Revenge," proved a blockbuster this summer.
Zhang, 30, will co-produce the English-language movie about women's friendships with two girlfriends, Wendi Deng, wife of News Corp Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch, and Florence Sloan, wife of MGM Chairman Harry Sloan.
Zhang would also star in the film, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.
The film is based on the novel by Lisa See of the same name. The story about a lifelong friendship between two women is set in remote China in the 19th century when women were subject to cultural seclusion and were mostly illiterate as they were denied their rights to education.
Lily and Snow Flower, the two main characters in the book, invented a secret women's code, nv shu, to gain freedom from suppression.
The movie will be directed by Wayne Wang, who earned his fame by helming the critically acclaimed "Joy Luck Club," a 1993 American film based on Amy Tan's novel about the relationships between Chinese-American women and their traditional Chinese mothers.
Wang also took part in the script writing in the "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan."
"Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" will start shooting early next year in China.
This will be Wang's first film set on the Chinese mainland.
Deng said last year in an interview that she and Zhang were about to start their own media company and the new movie might be the company's first project.
"Sophie's Revenge" first screened in August.
The lighthearted movie was a hit with Chinese audiences, pulling more than 90 million yuan (US$13.18 million) in box-office sales.
