Zhang swims 36.5 hours non-stop across Khanka Lake
THE first Chinese who swam across the English Channel in July 2001 has collected another honor by swimming 36.5 hours non-stop across the Khanka Lake on the China-Russia border.
Zhang Jian, a professor from the Beijing Sport University and a veteran marathon swimmer, began his latest odyssey on Sunday morning and reached the other bank at 8pm yesterday.
The hard-earned victory made the 46-year-old Chinese the first man in the world to swim such long distance, 69 kilometers, in an open lake, Xinhua news agency reported today.
The Khanka Lake is a fresh water lake between China and Russia. Zhang crossed the lake along the Chinese side of the border.
The water became cold a few hours after Zhang started as it began to rain and the wind was so strong that Zhang had to deviate from his origianl route. Yet he completed his stunt in 36.5 hours, short of the 40-hour goal he set before the trip.
