Zhejiang shuts high-end clubs to fight corruption

All high-end clubs in Zhejiang Province’s scenic areas, former residences of celebrities and cultural relic areas will be closed as the province tries to prevent official corruption, Oriental Morning Post reported yesterday .

As of yesterday, six clubs have been shut down, including the Jiangnan Club co-created by Jack Ma, chairman of Alibaba, the newspaper said.

Designed by famous artist Ai Weiwei, the Jiangnan Club charges a membership fee of 200,000 yuan (US$33,050).

The West Lake Administrative Commission said there are 28 luxurious and extravagant clubs in the West Lake scenic area in Hangzhou.

The decision to shut was in response to President’s Xi Jinping’s comments about the West Lake at a meeting of the Party’s Central Discipline Inspection Commission, said the newspaper.

Officials have started investigating the clubs and urged them to close or convert to more public-oriented venues.

Earlier the Hangzhou Discipline Inspection Commission banned government officials from entering the high-end clubs, or accepting and holding membership of such clubs.

Officials will face severe punishment if they break the ban.

Authorities in Beijing have also ordered high-end clubs in public parks to close or downgrade to an acceptable level, Xinhua new agency said.

Business at Yushantang and Shanglinyuan, two clubs in Beihai Park, known for their luxurious decorations, expensive meals and services, has been suspended, according to the Beijing Discipline Inspection Commission.
