Zhejiang university denies dorm had excessive levels of formaldehyde
Zhejiang Normal University has denied there were excessive levels of formaldehyde in a student dormitory after some students said it was to blame for their serious diseases, Southern Metropolis Daily reported today.
Some parents and students have blamed Zhejiang Normal University for exposing students to formaldehyde, a colorless, flammable, strong-smelling chemical used in building materials and to produce many household products, when the dorm opened.
On September 25, 2011, the school finished decorating its dorm in Jinhua City. Just 13 days later, 1,054 freshmen were told to move in, despite the strong odor of formaldehyde, they argued on the Internet.
A few female students reportedly have developed immune system disorders and problems in their joints, lungs and nose.
But the school has denied there were excessive levels of formaldehyde in the dorm.
An unidentified secretary of the university’s construction department told the newspaper the dorms were built according to standards.
“There is no evidence to show a connection between the dormitory’s decoration and diseases,” the secretary was cited as saying.
Formaldehyde is classified as a known human carcinogen or cancer-causing substance by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
