Zhengzhou police probed in blackmail case

AUTHORITIES of Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province, are probing online allegations that a local policeman extorted a grocery store owner by illegally detaining his workers.

The officer surnamed Fan set a trap and detained two shop assistants on January 1. He then blackmailed the store owner Liu Zhichuang for 5,000 yuan (US$805), someone tweeted on Weibo.com on Sunday.

The whistleblower also posted a 91-second video clip showing Fan and Liu talking in a hotel.

The man, without giving his real name, told the Henan Business Daily that he was a friend of Liu. He said four self-claimed plainclothes raided Liu's store on New Year's Day and nabbed two employees for using fake cash.

The female employee was freed after Liu gave Fan 1,000 yuan and the male employee was freed after Liu collected the remaining 4,000 yuan from Fan in the hotel, the whistleblower said.

Liu confirmed his friend's allegations, the newspaper said.

The Zhengzhou City Public Security Bureau said local disciplinary authorities are now investigating the case.
