Zhongkao bonus points policy gets parents鈥 blood boiling

A new blood donation policy that awards students bonus points on the high school entrance exam, known as the zhongkao, has stirred controversy as some parents believe it will lead to foul play in Pujiang, Zhejiang Province.

Parents in Pujiang can help their children receive up to three bonus points on the zhongkao based on how much blood they donate, officials said, Qianjiang Evening News reported today.

The policy was issued on July 24. It stated that zhongkao participants would receive one extra point if either their father or mother had donated 4,000 milliliters of blood. They would receive two points for 6,000 milliliters and three points for 8,000 milliliters, the report said.

A healthy adult is allowed to donate a maximum of 400 milliliters of blood at one time and can’t donate again for six months.

Some parents said it could lead to people donating blood recklessly and damaging their health. Others said it wasn’t fair because not all parents qualify to donate blood due to health reasons, according to the report.

Competition for places in high schools is often fierce and students can miss out on the school of their choosing by one point.
