Zhuhai busts world's biggest phone smugglers
ZHUHAI Customs have cracked the world's biggest mobile phone-smuggling case involving 160 people and 7.8 billion yuan (US$1.14 billion).
Taxes evaded in the case reached 1.1 billion yuan, today's Beijing Times reported after a briefing yesterday by national customs officials.
The investigation started in 2008, when Gongbei Customs officers caught nearly 1,000 smuggled mobile phones and five cars with a total value of 15.8 million yuan in Zhuahai and Shenzhen, both Guangdong Province cities.
State customs widened the investigation to net the smuggling ring of 160 people.
Sixteen suspects, including alleged ring leader Huang Xiaokai, were referred to prosecutors.
Four members were jailed for between five months and 15 years by Zhuhai Intermediate People's Court.
More than 20 million yuan in cash and smuggled goods were confiscated.
