Zoo keeper killed by park's tigers

FIVE tigers mauled a zoo keeper to death in an attack after he crossed the security barriers at a wildlife park in Shenzhen City, southern China's Guangdong Province.

The 54-year-old zoo keeper Sheng Jinhua was cleaning up the weeds on a bridge over the enclosure holding nine tigers at 2:45pm on Thursday.

After finishing his work, Sheng climbed onto the 1.8-meter glass barrier surrounding the bridge and then fell into the enclosure, and was mauled to death, said the park's spokesman Zheng Chaolun yesterday.

The reason why Sheng broke the rules to go over the barrier remain unknown, -reported yesterday's Guangzhou Daily.

The tigers were chased away by other zoo keepers with fire cracker and they entered the enclosure, only to find Sheng dead.

Huang Xianda, the park's manager, told reporters Sheng's family would receive compensation from insurance money.

The park would also offer Sheng's family further compensation under a sense of moral obligation.
