Zoo parrot stages prison break

A parrot in a zoo in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, has gained fame after repeated attempts to escape in the past eight years, Qianjiang Evening News reported yesterday.

Sporting a white crest, parrot Sunflower lives in the city's Wild Animal Zoo. Zookeepers used glass to cover a tree next to Sunflower's cage to prevent it from climbing the tree to escape. The clever bird has found the tree an escapae route but the poor thing was always caught in the last minute.

After several failed attempts Sunflower conspired with other parrots for a mass exodus. It chased them up the trunk to make them escape. But every time other parrots were lured away by food offered by the zookeeper.

Sunflower may have been inspired by sparrows that often fly into the roofless parrot cage to feed on zoo food, the zookeeper told Qianjiang Evening News.

Unlike pet parrots sold in the market, those in the Wild Animal Zoo are much larger and heavier and can barely fly. So they are not chained and no roof is needed, allowing Sunflower to fancy freedom.
