Zoo worker arrested after fatal tiger attack

A WORKER with a northwest China zoo has been arrested over negligence after five tigers killed a father and savaged his son after they mistakenly ran into their cage on June 13.

Chang'an District People's Procuratorate Office in Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province, yesterday approved the police arrest of Liang Guangzhou, 33, worker with Xi'an Qingling Wildlife Park, today's Chinese Business View newspaper reported.

The 45-year-old father died at the scene due to blood loss. The son was rescued by zoo staff responding at the site and is hospitalized with leg injuries.

Liang was detained the next day for negligently causing a serious accident.

He allegedly forgot to shut two doors of the tiger section when a sight-seeing bus ran into the nearby areas. The father and son who didn't take the bus mistakenly strolled into the tiger section and were immediately attacked.

The zoo agreed to pay 430,000 yuan (US$63,480) in compensation to the victims.

Several zoo officials have been removed.
