Ex-Hebei official on trial for graft

JING Chunhua, a former senior official in north China’s Hebei Province, stood on trial yesterday in Changchun City for graft worth 146.9 million yuan (US$22 million).

Prosecutors said Jing owned property worth about 86.36 million yuan, which he could not account for.

He was also accused of taking about 60.55 million yuan in bribes from 31 individuals and companies between 2001 and 2013, when he served as deputy Party chief of Chengde City, city mayor, Party chief of Hengshui City and secretary general of Hebei’s Party committee.

In return, he helped them with deals on projects, business operation and job promotions, the Intermediate People’s Court of Changchun City, capital of Jilin Province, heard yesterday.

Jing accepted the charges, the court said.

Jing was under investigation for “suspected serious discipline and law violations” since March 2015.

Meanwhile, the Communist Party of China’s disciplinary watchdog said that 163,000 people were punished for violating Party discipline in the first half of 2016, Xinhua news agency said. Officials at various levels were punished, including 41 at provincial and ministerial levels, as well as 96,000 others from rural areas and enterprises.

In 2015, 336,000 people were punished for breaching Party and political discipline, and 14,000 were turned over to the judiciary for suspected criminal activity.
