Ex-PLA general charged with corruption
解放军总后原副部长谷俊山被起诉

A FORMER senior army officer has been charged with corruption by military prosecutors.

The charges against Gu Junshan, who had the rank of lieutenant general, include taking bribes, misuse of public funds and abuse of power. Gu is also said to have sold military positions.

Gu was deputy head of the People’s Liberation Army’s general logistics department, a position offering him wide-ranging powers over procurement and contracts for the 2.3 million-member armed forces.

He has been under investigation since four truckloads of alleged plunder including gold statues and cases of high-end liquor were removed from one of his mansions in Henan Province last year.

Gu is said to have secured professional favors for members of his family, including his brother Gu Xianjun, who was arrested last August for bribery, according to Caixin magazine.

Gu is alleged to have lined his pockets through the kickbacks he had received over the transfer of military-owned land in premium locations throughout China.

In Shanghai, Gu allegedly received a 6 percent kickback for plot of military land that fetched more than 2 billion yuan (US$330 million), and in his hometown of Puyang his family was known for land grabs and real estate developments, the business magazine said.

In Puyang, Gu’s family built seven riverside villas for Gu and his siblings, including one modeled on the former imperial palace in Beijing, Caixin said.
