Ex-official tried for graft in Shanxi
DU Shanxue, former deputy governor of Shanxi Province in north China, stood trial in the eastern city of Xuzhou in Jiangsu Province yesterday for graft.
Du, who is also a former member of the Standing Committee of the Shanxi Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), was accused of accepting bribes totaling 80.11 million yuan (US$11.99 million) from 28 individuals and organizations personally or through a third party, according to prosecutors.
They also alleged that he had offered 100,000 euro (US$111,000) to Ling Zhengce, then vice chairman of the Shanxi Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, for his endorsement in a CPC Shanxi Provincial Committee election in 2011.
Du was unable to prove that 89.62 million yuan of family assets was acquired from legitimate sources, prosecutors said.
Du’s legal team was with him throughout the trial, and both the prosecution and defense were given the opportunity to fully review the evidence and express their opinions, the court said.
The defendant pleaded guilty and expressed remorse.
The verdict will be announced at a later date.
