Ex-senior adviser on trial for 11m yuan bribes
广西政协原副主席李达球受贿案一审开庭,涉案超千万
A FORMER senior political adviser from south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region stood trial yesterday, accused of taking bribes worth 10.95 million yuan (US$1.78 million).
Li Daqiu, 61, took advantage of his positions when he was Party chief of Hezhou City in Guangxi and vice chairman of the regional political advisory body between 2003 and 2013, prosecutors said.
He accepted huge bribes and sought benefits for 17 individuals and companies, heard the Intermediate People’s Court of Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in Jilin Province.
This included helping them to get promotions and construction contracts, said prosecutors.
The court heard that Tan Yuhe, former chief of Hezhou’s Zhonghan County, was one of those involved. Tan was sentenced to 11 years and six months in jail in May for abuse of power and accepting almost 4.8 million yuan in bribes.
The verdict was not announced yesterday, China National Radio reported.
Li was investigated over severe disciplinary violations on July 6 last year.
In September 2013, he was expelled from the Party and removed from public office.
The 21st Century Business Herald earlier reported Li’s alleged involvement in illegal mining around Hezhou, an area rich in gold, silver and tin.
A local mafia boss Li Ruixiong — who was sentenced to life in prison in April over violence used to illegally occupy land and mines — was reportedly protected by Li Daqiu as his relative was the boss behind Li Ruxiong.
Li is the seventh provincial-level official being toppled in Guangxi over bribery and corruption. The others are Cheng Kejie, the former chairman of the regional government; three former vice chairmen, Xu Bingsong, Liu Zhibing and Sun Yu; and two former vice chairmen of a local advisory body, Wang Qinglu and Liang Chunlu.
Cheng was executed by injection in September 2000 in Beijing for accepting 41 million yuan in bribes.
Xu was jailed for life in 1999 for taking 550,000 yuan in bribes. Liu was jailed for 15 years in 2002 and Sun was imprisoned for 18 years in 2009.
