Former Jiangxi vice governor probed

THE former vice governor of east China’s Jiangxi Province is under investigation for alleged bribe-taking, the Supreme People’s Procuratorate said yesterday.

China’s Party disciplinary watchdog said Yao Mugen was kicked out of the Party and dismissed from the public office for serious violation of discipline and law.

Yao is alleged to have misused his position and sought favors and bribes, the Party’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said. It announced an investigation against Yao on March 22 and he was removed from his post on April 11.

His downfall was reportedly linked to his job as head of Jiangxi Province’s development and reform commission. For 16 years, he approved projects and amassed wealth and assets disproportionate to his income.

“Yao was very powerful and was involved in too many big projects and administrative approvals,” a retired official told the 21st Century Business Herald.

The 57-year-old owned dozens of properties while bank deposits ran into tens of millions of yuan. He lied about his wealth, several officials told the China Economic Weekly, a magazine run by People’s Daily.

“After the inspection team arrived in Jiangxi, inspectors checked the personal profiles of all of the provincial-level officials,” a source told the magazine. “There were rumors at that time that one official’s personal assets declaration was at variance with the facts. That was Yao,” the source said, adding that he owned dozens of properties but he claimed he just had one.

His properties were spread across the nation like in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. “As investigations ran deeper, it was found he owed huge stocks,” the source said.

Yao told them that the stocks, worth millions of yuan, belonged to his relatives, and the properties were bought by others.

Several local officials said that one of his properties in Beijing was bought in the name of a cadre from his department. The cadre was given the government job by Yao in 2008. The commission said such promotion in government service violated the rules. The cadre had also been taken in for questioning.

Yao’s wife Yi Anping was also taken away by the disciplinary watchdog.

Some businessmen, known to have close ties with Yao, have also been placed under investigation.
