THE former Communist Party of China (CPC) chief of Kunming has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for accepting and offering bribes, a court in southwest China's Yunnan Province announced Friday.

Gao Jinsong was found guilty of accepting 11.9 million yuan (US$1.7 million) in bribes between 2000 and 2015 in return for loans, contracts and promotions for others, according to the verdict issued Thursday by municipal intermediate people's court in Lincang.

The bribes were paid in Chinese yuan, other foreign currencies, gold and jade.

Over the period, Gao held several posts, including executive vice mayor of the provincial capital Kunming, secretary of the Qujing and Kunming CPC municipal committees, it said.

During the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday in 2010 and 2011, Gao paid former Party chief of Yunnan Bai Enpei a total of 2 million Hong Kong dollars for the latter to help him secure a promotion, the court found.

Gao was fined 1.3 million yuan, and all his illegal earnings will be confiscated and retrieved.

The sentence was not too harsh, as Gao confessed to more crimes than prosecutors knew about, the court said.
