Former official jailed for taking bribes

LIAO Shaohua, a former provincial-level official in southwest China’s Guizhou Province, was yesterday sentenced to 16 years in prison for bribery and abuse of power.

The Intermediate People’s Court in Xi’an, capital of northwest China’s Shaanxi Province also ordered the confiscation of his property worth 1.3 million yuan (US$210,000).

Before an investigation was launched in 2013, Liao served as a standing committee member of the Communist Party’s Guizhou Provincial Committee and acted as Party secretary in Zunyi.

The court said Liao had taken bribes worth more than 13.2 million yuan while serving as mayor of Liupanshui and Party secretary of Qiandongnan Prefecture from 2004 to 2012.

His abuse of power caused 3.1 million yuan in losses to fiscal funds, it said.

The court said its sentence was lenient to reflect the fact that Liao had confessed and returned some of the money.
