Former top officials to face graft charges

CHINA is to take court action against a former deputy sports minister and a former police chief in a northern city, among others, for corruption, the top prosecutor’s office said yesterday, the latest step in the government’s anti-graft campaign.

President Xi Jinping has made rooting out corruption a priority, and the ruling Party’s anti-graft body, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, has felled dozens of high-ranking officials.

In a statement, the Supreme People’s Procuratorate listed five individuals and the charges they face.

Xiao Tian, formerly deputy head of the General Administration of Sport, who sat on China’s Olympics committee, is among those whose cases had moved forward, the procuratorate said.

Last year, an investigation found that Xiao, whose position was equivalent to vice minister, abused his position and took bribes.

Beijing won the right to host the 2022 Winter Olympics last July.

Abuse of power

Also to be prosecuted is Wu Changshun, once the public security chief in north China’s Tianjin, becoming the city’s third police head to be investigated in eight years.

Wu is suspected of bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power.

The other three listed are Qiu He, former deputy head of the Party’s Yunnan provincial committee, who is charged with accepting bribes in return for benefits; Yang Weize, ex-Party chief of Nanjing, capital of east China’s Jiangsu Province; and Si Xinliang, former deputy head of the provincial political advisory body in east China’s Zhejiang Province.

The SPP also said that it is investigating Chen Xuefeng, a former member of the Standing Committee of the Party’s Henan provincial committee, for suspected bribery. Chen was stripped of his Party membership on Thursday.

Also yesterday, the disciplinary authority in central China’s Hubei Province said it was investigating Liao Tianming, head of the Intermediate People’s Court in the city of Ezhou, over allegations he seriously violated the Party’s code of conduct.
